Even though my children 'graduated' from B'nai Shalom of Olney's preschool years ago (they are teenagers now) they still come back and cherish the friendships they made there. It was a solid foundation for the years they would spend learning and growing at our family's synagogue.

This school leaves a lot to be desired. I had high hopes when I first registered my young child for nursery school. The Director appeared involved and concerned; the teacher my child was to have seemed warm, nurturing and friendly. As the school year approached, the original teacher was replaced without any formal notification to the parents, by someone new. It was already a trying time since this both my child's and my first experience with school and to find out that the environment was changing, again, was concerning. Being very pregnant, I had little time to investigate new schools and sent my child hoping for the best. The first few months went seemingly well, although the teacher, in my opinion, was the complete opposite of friendly, warm and nurturing-I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. In the Spring, I waited out in the hall since I had arrived a bit early for pick up, only to hear the teacher screaming at my 3 yo who apparently was not heeding her direction to sit down on the run and read quietly. I scheduled a meeting with the teacher the following week who at first denied my claim, but eventually admitted to loosing her patience and then asked me what should she have done instead????? I was shocked that a so called professional educator would ask such a thing of a parent. I weas hopeful that the problem had been corrected, but then my daughter began having difficulties with drop off and spoke often of being grabbed and brought to a couch. I called a meeting with the teacher and Director to discuss the issue. The Director laughed at my concerns regarding the harsh demeanor of and punitive measures enforced by the teacher towards my daughter. The teacher glared at me from across the table which I felt to be intimidating in nature even as an adult. They implied that I was over reacting and/or making stories up and disregarded all of my concerns. As I left the room, I realized that this was not a place that I would want my daughter and promptly withdrew her from the school. That being said, the Rabbi is a wonderful man and it's a pity that one bad teacher and unprofessional Director could damage the reputation of the synagogue.
